1,040,064. Variable-ratio friction gears. GLAENZER SPICER S.A. Feb. 25, 1963 [March 13, 1962], No. 7466/63. Heading F2D. A variable-ratio friction gear comprises three conical rings 1-3, input and output rings 1, 2 being universally jointed to shafts 4, 12 for rotation with the shafts and planetary rotation about the shafts, and a reaction ring 3 which is universally jointed to a fixed housing 13 for circular, non-rotatary motion. One or more of the rings can be shifted axially to vary the ratio. Various arrangements of the rings are described, for example the reaction ring can be the innermost ring or between the other two. Fig. 20 (not shown) shows an arrangement having two driven rings connected to separate output shafts, Fig. 9 (not shown), shows a gear having oppositely conical portions 18, 19 the outer and inner surfaces of which are engageable by similarly coned portions 20, 21 of a reaction member to give forward and reverse. Fig. 8 (not shown) shows a gear having a ring 16 of friction material mounted in the driven ring and engaged by the driving ring to increase the friction for starting. The rings are pressed into frictional engagement during operation by centrifugal force.
