The method involves determining a target number of cylinders of an engine (102) to be active during a future time period, where the future time period comprises N sub-periods. A target sequence is generated based on enabling and disabling cylinders of the engine during the future period to preset sequences. An opening of intake and exhaust valves (122, 133) of a first cylinder (118) of multiple cylinders is activated based on the target sequence during the future period. The opening of the valves is turned off by a second cylinder based on the target sequence during the future period.
