A system for automatically generating a bill of material (BOM) and a method thereof are disclosed. The system for automatically generating a BOM comprises: a data format converting unit for converting the format of a new data file generated by AutoCad to match a configuration which a DB server supports; an item code matching unit for matching the items of the format-converted new data file and the items of a data file stored in the DB server, and giving, to the matching items, the same item codes as the item codes of the stored data file; an item code generating unit for generating new item codes for the items of the new data file which are not matched by the item code matching unit; and a BOM generating unit for generating a BOM by adding the new item codes to the item codes of the stored data file.
