Chlorine-containing polymers are stabilized against deterioration by heat and light by addition of a minor amount of an aliphatic mercapto alcohol. Alkaline earth salts of aliphatic acids of more than 10 carbon atoms may also be added, specified are oleates, stearates and 12-ketostearates. Specified polymers are vinyl chloride polymers and copolymers with minor amounts of other ethylenically unsaturated compounds, listed are copolymers with vinyl acetate and ethylene-1.2 dicarboxylic acid dialkyl esters, e.g. maleates, fumarates, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride polymers and copolymers with minor amounts of other ethylenically unsaturated compounds, chlorinated polyethylene and chlorinated rubber (see Group V). Mercapto alcohols specified are the butanols and propanediols, thiosorbitol, thiodextrose, thiolevulose, thiomannose and 1.6-mannitol dithiol. Plasticisers may also be added, listed are di-(butoxyethyl) sebacate, dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate and methoxymethyl acetylricinoleate.
