An identification validation system 10 for electronically presenting third-party verified identification comprises an independent issuing station 32 for receiving third party validated user visual identification data, such as a photo of a user; a mobile handheld interrogation station 28 for receiving the user visual identification data (photo) from the issuing station and having a short-range wireless electronic data reader 48, 50; a mobile handheld user station 42 to transmit to the issuing station a request for an encrypted downloadable unique electronic machine-readable identifier 44 corresponding to the user visual identification data. The electronic identifier is presented to the interrogation station 28 for reading by the electronic data reader. A retrieval program 52 retrieves the user visual identification data (photo) based on the electronic identifier for display by the interrogation station. An interrogator 26, such as a doorman or bouncer, compares the displayed user visual identification data (photo) with the visual appearance of the presenter 12. The system may be used to validate the identities of patrons to a nightclub, bar or restaurant and means that conventional forms of identification such as passports, driving licenses, do not have to be carried. The mobile stations 28, 42 may be mobile telephones or smartphones. |
