The method involves detecting a surrounding region of a vehicle (1) i.e. motor car, using a sensor (KAM) that provides sensor data of an environment image. A position of the vehicle relative to a gasoline pump is determined based on the data. Auxiliary information is provided for positioning the vehicle with respect to the gasoline pump depending on the relative position of the vehicle. The sensor is provided with a camera, and the vehicle is automatically positioned with respect to the gasoline pump based on the data. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a vehicle.
