The invention relates to low VOC resin composition for gel coat or a mold composite. The composition comprises a polyester acrylic polymer having two or more polymerizable carbon-carbon double bonds representing acrylate groups, in each molecule and at least one polymerizable vinyl monomer, wherein the said polyester acrylic polymer is a reaction product of a polyacid and of an unsaturated epoxide, having a number average molecular weight of 560-2500, and a viscosity of no more than 1500 mPa.s (1500 cP) in a solution with 30 weight % of styrene monomer, wherein the said polyester acrylic polymer contains less than 10 weight % of aromatic ring structure, wherein the said polyacid is a half-ester being the reaction product of a polyol or mixture of polyols with one or more polycarboxylic acids or acid anhydrides, with the said polyol or mixture of polyols having an average of at least two hydroxyl groups in the molecule, with an average hydroxyl number of 56 to 1830, and having a number average molecular weight between 72 and 2000. The obtained low viscosity resin composition, is useful for making a low or zero VOC gel coat or a molded composite with excellent hydrolytic and weather resistance. |
