The method involves storing and stacking plates in a storage space (2i) inside a storage space group (20) by a plate manipulator (4) and subsequently determining the number of plates in each storage space. The number of plates required for the planned production as presorting interval or material requirement is set. The free capacity of each storage space is determined. The number of plates required for the planned production are restacked and presorted on presorting spaces (2j) by the plate manipulator, where the presorting spaces are existing storage spaces. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a database-based data processing system for executing the method; and (2) a data medium with a program for executing the method.
