An insufflation apparatus for artificial respiration or narcosis comprises a manually compressible pumping means including inlet and outlet connections 3, 4 with check valves 5, 6, the outlet being for connection to the air ducts of a patient, and a thin, gas tight, resilient membrane 1 forming part of the outer wall of the pumping means, the membrane being such that below a predetermined threshold pressure within the pumping means, the membrane does not expand, whereas a pressure above the threshold, possibly caused by a blockage in the patients ducts, causes the membrane to expand sufficient to prevent an increase in pressure above the threshold value. In the embodiment shown the membrane may expand to the line 11 to prevent increased pressure, the region 2 being thickwalled and resilient. Further pressure increase would cause further expansion in the directions. In a further embodiment the membrane covers a channelled insert, which insert is self-restoring, and provides a return to the reservoir capacity following compression. The membrane is free of the insert at points corresponding to the channels in the insert, and expands in these regions due to pressure increases above the threshold value. The maintainance of the pressure at or below the threshold value prevents damage to the patient which might otherwise be caused by high pressures. |
