dl-19-Norpregna-4,16-diene-3,20-dione (I) is obtained by reducing 2-(7,11-dimethyl-trans, trans-dodeca-3,7,11-trienyl)-3-methyl-cyclope nt-2-en-1-one (II) to 2-(7,11-dimethyl-trans, trans-dodeca-3,7,11-trienyl-)-3-methylcyclopent-2-en-1-ol (III) which is cyclised to dl-3,17-dimethyl-A-nor-D-homooestra-3, 16, diene (IV). This is then ozonized to the new 1 alpha-(3-oxobutyl)-5 beta-formylmethyl-6 alpha-(2-oxopropyl)-6 beta-methyl-3,4,4 alpha beta-,5,6,7,8,8a alpha-octahydro-2(1H)-naphthalinone (V) which is directly converted to (I) without purifying.
