A hydroponic apparatus for the cultivation of grass or the like forage crops comprises devices to dispense seed on a culture substrate, to water the seeds, and to harvest the final crop. In the embodiment shown the substrate is arranged on the upper run of an endless conveyor 10 and seeds are deposited on it from hopper 16 as it moves in the direction A. While the crop grows a water or nutrient delivering device 26 may be employed and when it is to be harvested further movement of the belt in the same direction will carry the crop past the edge 22 and so down chute 20 to be conveyed to a feeding station. Alternatively a seed dispenser may move over the substrate and a harvesting device may be dragged through the crop. The substrate may include a bed of porous material e.g. chopped straw, blotting paper. |
