The present invention relates to a novel use of an extract of Alisma orientale for treatment of inflammatory pulmonary diseases, and more particularly, to a composition for preventing or treating inflammatory pulmonary diseases, comprising an extract of Alisma orientale as an active ingredient. The extract of Alisma orientale of the present invention can effectively reduce inflammatory cells by activating Nrf2 as a representative transcriptional factor involved in anti-inflammation. In particular, the in vivo experiment proved that acute pneumonia can be remarkably ameliorated in an animal experiment group administered with the extract of Alisma orientale. The composition of the present invention comprising the extract of Alisma orientale as an active ingredient can effectively suppress pneumonia, and thus is useful for treatment of the inflammatory pulmonary diseases.
