PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an element and a device which are adapted so as to exhibit both linear polarization and photochromic characteristics.SOLUTION: An optical element including a first state and a second state comprises at least partial coating bonded to at least a portion of a substrate. The at least partial coating interchanges from the first state to the second state in response to at least actinic ray radiation, and returns to the first state in response to thermal energy. Furthermore, the optical element is adapted so as to convert at least transmitted radiation into linearly polarized light in at least one of the first state and the second state.
