Carbon monoxide is removed from gases containing it by catalytic conversion with steam, the catalyst containing copper, magnesium oxide and aluminium oxide and reaction temperature being below 400 DEG C. The catalyst may be prepared via the metal hydroxides obtained by co-precipitation of the metal salt solutions by means of alkali hydroxides, followed by reduction with hydrogen. They may be regenerated by passing air over them without heating. Substances such as cerium oxide, thorium oxide or alkali compounds which may act as promoters may be present. If an excessive amount of monoxide is initially present it may first be reduced to below 2 per cent by other known processes. |
