The present invention relates to a character service system, and a method and apparatus for providing a character service in the system. The character service system comprises: a terminal device for collecting images for face recognition, creating a character using one or more character samples created with the collected images, applying the created character to a message to be transmitted or received, if a character message is received from a secondary user, executing, on a standby screen, a character of the secondary user included in the received character message, and notifying the user of reception of the message through the executed character of the secondary user; and a character service device for receiving the collected images from the terminal device, recognizing a face from the received images to create one or more character samples, transmitting the created one or more character samples to the terminal device according to a request of the terminal device, and transmitting the character message received from the secondary user to the terminal device.
