PURPOSE: To provide a hydrogen storage alloy electrode and an alkaline storage battery in which a function to consume oxygen gas on the acid-treated surface of hydrogen storage alloy is kept in the initial activation of the battery or in the charge/discharge cycles, and deterioration in battery characteristic is reduced. CONSTITUTION: An alkaline storage battery is constituted with an electrode group 4 formed by stacking a positive electrode 1 made of sintered nickel and a negative electrode 2 containing hydrogen storage alloy through a separator 3, then spirally winding them, alkaline electrolyte, and a cylindrical outer can 6 for housing them. The negative electrode 2 is formed by applying the hydrogen storage alloy to the both surfaces of a current collector 5 made of a spiral plate-shaped punched metal with a binder. The hydrogen storage alloy has an average particle size of 45μm or less and the surface is treated with hydrochloric acid.
