PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system of detecting a radioactive material, identifying its location, and providing an alarm upon the detection.SOLUTION: A semiconductor based imaging apparatus detects gamma rays and energetic particles emitted by radioactive materials. Artifacts are identified in gamma ray images and visible images. False-positive detection of gamma rays is prevented. A gradient method allows more accurate determination of the radiation source location from the gamma ray images. Radioisotopes are identified. The system is used for security for tracking or preventing illegal transportation or the like of radioactive materials. |
