LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE

A liquid crystal display device is provided. The liquid crystal display device comprises: a first substrate; a second substrate separated from, and facing the first substrate; a liquid crystal layer placed between the first and second substrates; a plate-shaped common electrode placed between the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer; and a pixel electrode with a pattern which limits an opening placed between the common electrode and the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer comprises 1-50 wt% of achiral smectic liquid crystal and the remainder of nematic liquid crystal.
