A dimethyl styrene, having the methyl groups substituted in the nucleus and having one of the methyl groups in the ortho position to the vinyl group, is polymerized to a thermoplastic fusible solid. The dimethyl styrene is substantially pure, melts within a range of 3 DEG C. and has an optical exaltation of at least one, and the polymerization is continued until the intrinsic viscosity is at least 0.1. Specified styrenes are the 2-3, the 2-4 and the 2-5, dimethyl styrenes. The polymerization may be carried out by bulk or emulsion technique in the present of peroxygen compounds and promoters at a preferred temperature of from 20 DEG to 200 DEG C. Specified dispersing and emulsifying agents are talc, calcium phosphate, styrene-maleic acid copolymers, mimethyl-styrene-maleic acid copolymers, methyl cellulose, methyl starch, glycol cellulose, polyacrylamide, sodium hydroxystearate, sodium lauryl sulphate, the sodium salts of alkyl substituted naphthalene sulphonic acids, the sodium salt of the dioctyl ester of sulphosuccinic acid, dodecylamine hydrochloride, dodecylamine formate and trimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride.
