A method and apparatus for investigating the electroporation properties of cells suspended in a fluid. The apparatus comprises: first and second substrates spaced apart from each other; a first array of electrodes formed on a surface of the first substrate; at least one electrode formed on the surface of the second substrate facing the first array of electrodes. The at least one electrode and the first array of electrodes thereby define the upper and lower bounds of an analysis volume for receiving the fluid, the analysis volume comprising an array of volume portions. Circuitry is arranged to modify the amplitude and duration of a voltage applied to at least the first array of electrodes so as to generate and modify an electric field in one or more volume portions of the device. Thus, the 10 electroporation properties of the cells may be investigated by generating electric fields of different amplitudes or durations in one or more volume portions of the apparatus with the fluid placed therein.
