The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for extracting a target, and a recording medium storing a program for performing the method and, more specifically, to an apparatus and a method for extracting a target by performing statistic modeling for pixel brightness values in an image, and a recording medium storing a program for performing the method. The method for extracting a target comprises the following steps: extracting a background image from an input image; performing Gaussian distribution modeling for each brightness value of the input image and background image; calculating a likelihood ratio for determining whether each pixel in the image is a target pixel using a correlation between the input image modeling result and the background image modeling result and target templates having various sizes; determining a target position using the calculated likelihood ratio; and outputting the determined target position information. According to the present invention, a target can be accurately extracted from an image regardless of change in target size by using multiple target templates having various sizes, background image modeling, and a correlation between an input image and a background image.
