[Class 51 (ii).] In a vertical retort furnace for the production of gas and coke, separate vertical heating passages d extend from top to bottom of the setting e and are supplied at their upper and lower ends f, g with preheated gas and air, the waste gases escaping to separate outlet flues h through apertures disposed at about the middle points of the passages d. The outlet flues h all deliver to a passage h<1> which communicates with the main waste gas flue m and serves to preheat the gas passing through the pipe n to the burners f, g. Separate airheating passages are provided for each burner, the passages i for the upper burners extending vertically through the setting and those k for the lower burners being of inverted U-form as shown in Fig. 1. Offtakes c for the distillation gases are formed in the central core b.</p> |
