The device has an ultrasound sensor (200) receiving a ultrasound signal (208a), and a controller (120) controlling the sensor to optionally send and receive the ultrasound signal such that the controller determines an extension length of an extendable machine part based on the received signal. The sensor comprises two ultrasound converters (206a, 206b) arranged on a carrier such that the converters are offset along a measuring direction by a predetermined distance (V). The carrier has an L-shaped cross-section and two surfaces aligned in the measuring direction. An independent claim is also included for a mobile machine.
