The rack and pinion steering (10) has a rotatably mounted steering pinion that is meshed with a gear such that the rack gear is displaced toward the longitudinal axis by the rotation of steering pinion. A spring element (20) is arranged for applying a spring force on the slide ring and pushing the rack gear toward the guidance pinion. The spring element is formed from a wall portion of the steel housing (12). An independent claim is included for method for manufacturing housing of rack and pinion steering for motor car.
