In an augmented reality environment, successive video images of a real surface and a pair of control objects (s10)which may be a users hands or digits, or a pair of interactive devicesare captured by a video input means. An interaction start area is defined (s20) over the surface with respect to the virtual object. The system detects the presence of the control objects in successive video images (s30), and whether the two control objects are brought together over the interaction start area (s40). If this is the case, the device adjusts the video image of the AR environment (s50) to show the virtual object being held by the control objects, illustrating the virtual object having been picked up by the control objects and allowing for its repositioning. Determining the movement of the control objects may involve optical flow analysis. The arrangement allows the system to recognize the specific gesture and provide the necessary action, particularly in circumstances where that gesture occludes or otherwise interferes with fiduciary markers used on the surface.
