HEAD MOUNTED DISPLAY, BRIGHTNESS ADJUSTMENT METHOD, AND CONTROL PROGRAM

In this head mounted display, backlight brightness for a liquid crystal device corresponding to a brightness level adjusted by a brightness dial is determined according to ambient illuminance detected by an illuminance sensor with reference to a brightness determination table (321). In the brightness determination table (321) the gap in brightness between brightness levels for a third range, for which the ambient illuminance is bright, is wide compared to a first range, for which the ambient illuminance is dark. Furthermore, even if the illuminance ranges differ from each other, the proportion of backlight brightness for ambient illuminance at the same brightness level is constant. Hence, the brightness of the backlight can be adjusted in a state in which see-through characteristics in a half mirror that reflects image light are maintained even when the ambient illuminance has changed.
