<PICT:0687076/IV (a)/1> Running lengths of artificial yarns, ribbons and like products prepared from materials such as vinyl polymers, e.g. acrylonitrile, polyamides, cellulose derivatives, and regenerated cellulose, are subjected to treatment with a fluid (e.g. to treatment with a hot plasticizer such as steam during a stretching operation, or to treatment with air, water, or formaldehyde vapour, or such substances as alcohols or ketones in liquid or vapour form) by passing them through a vessel comprising an inlet tube or tubes in one end thereof and having an extension therewithin; a cell passage or passages mounted within the vessel so as to be slidably super-imposed over the extension; an outlet or outlets at the other end of the vessel co-operating with the inlet(s) and the passage(s); restraining means for keeping said passage(s) in the vessel and means for controlling the flow of fluid in the passage(s). The apparatus shown provides inter alia means for placing the passages in inoperative position and initially feeding yarn therethrough either collectively, or individually without interfering with the fluid treatment in the remaining passages: it comprises a cell-body 1, for containing the fluid under pressure, closed by plates 2 and 3 attached to aspiration chambers 5 and 7 both of which are open at one end and to the other end of which suction is applied; each inlet tube 15 tapers to a tube 18 over which fits the tapered entrance end of a slidably supported cell tube 19, the other end of which is joined to or integral with an outlet tube 16 which is free to slide in the plate 3. In order that the initial feeding of a yarn may be effected, a tube 19 is moved by means of an inserted suction tube 26 into the position in which the upper tube is shown so that a valve seat 25 contacts a valve seat 24 to isolate the cell passage from the fluid; a tube 27 positioned by bushings 28 is extended into the tube 15 so that the tubes 27, 15, 19, 16 and 26 form a continuous closed passage. The yarn treatment is initiated by withdrawing the tube 26, retracting the tube 27, and opening the fluid port to the cell passage by retracting the tubes 19, 16, into the position in which the lower tube is shown. An auxiliary valve seating for the end of the tube 27 is provided on the plate 2 by a recess 32 so that the tube 15 may be removed for cleaning or replacement without interrupting the treatment in adjacent passages.
