The camera system (10) has a frame (16) that defines a cavity (18). A camera (14) attached to the frame within the cavity includes a lens (20). A shape memory alloy is transitionable between two states, in response to a thermal activation signal. A wiper (22) is configured for wiping debris from the lens. The wiper is attached to the camera and actuatable by the shape memory alloy. The shape memory alloy is transitioned between the two states to actuate the wiper so that the wiper is contacted and translated across the lens to wipe debris from the lens.
