A system and method is provided for producing linear and branched hydrocarbons and in particular triterpenes in plant cells. The system and method includes a transformed plant cells with an isolated nucleic acid encoding a farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FPS) and with an isolated nucleic acid encoding a triterpene synthase.
