A method for the surgical treatment of the retroperitoneal metastases of testicular cancer comprises intraoperative biopsy and express examination of the residual tissue for assessing the changes in retroperitoneal tissue following chemotherapy. When necrosis or fibrosis in the residual tumor is detected suboperatively, the retroperitoneal tissue is resected along vena cava inferior, the right iliac artery, the anterior surface of aorta down to the origin of the inferior mesenteric artery in the case of tumor in the right testicle. In the case of the tumor in the left testicle, the retroperitoneal tissue is resected along the left surface of aorta and the left iliac artery. The sympathetic trunks and ganglions on the anterior surface of aorta downstream the origin of the inferior mesenteric artery and in bifurcation area are spared. |
