PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter provided with a helically-meshable pinion gear, which is configured so that a tooth chamfered part can be formed by use of an existing processing facility, cutting tool or processing method while securing satisfactory meshing properties.SOLUTION: The starter includes: the pinion gear 74 provided slidably on an output shaft which rotates upon receiving rotating force of a motor part, and can be herically meshed with a ring gear of an engine; and an electromagnetic device which gives the pinion gear 74 a pressing force toward the ring gear side. A tooth chamfered part 68 is formed on a tooth part 66 of the pinion gear 74 by chamfering an axial gear end surface 67. The inclination α of the tooth chamfered part 68 relative to the output shaft and the inclination &bgr; of the tooth part 66 relative to the output shaft are set to satisfy α≥90°-&bgr;. |
