The present invention relates to capital costs of optical fibre based networks which are determined, and by modeling the network, the impact of the variation of physical parameters can be assessed, prior to the detailed planning phase. A particular building layout or geotype (type and location of buildings) is formed by using satellite, or other imagery, of a real location, embedded into a worksheet, and suitable values entered into cells in the worksheet, such that the dimensions match the scale of the imagery. The scales within the worksheet may be varied in both the horizontal and vertical directions independently, such that a variant of the geotype is produced, altering cable and trench distances. The number of tenancies served from a street node, may be altered through the use of a Node Tolerance factor allowing for the fact that the actual number of tenancies served by a particular size of node, may be flexed. The cable layout may be varied as either single or double lay, though the use of a % road crossings factor. Finally, a number of multi-dwelling units (MDUs) may be incorporated within the geotype, though the use of an MDU parameter, which substitutes one or more tenancies in each branch of the cable layout, for one or more MDUs. |
