In an alkaline dry cell in which the anode and the cathode are of cylindrical form and disposed one within the other and in which the electrolyte is an aqueous solution absorbed in a separator of porous polyvinyl chloride or porous rubber between the anode and cathode, the separator has interior longitudinal ribs so that the anode material can expand during discharge of the cell. Fig. 1 shows a cell comprising a cathode depolarizer 2 of a mixture of mercuric oxide and micronized graphite and a consolidated, but porous, cylindrical anode 7 of amalgamated zinc powder. The anode and cathode are separated by a cup 3 of porous polyvinyl chloride saturated with potassium hydroxide, the cup having longitudinal ribs 4 (Fig. 2) abutting the anode. Compression of a grommet 10 between the outer container 9 and the lid 8 during sealing causes the anode to be firmly seated on the base of the cup. Absorbent material 11, e.g. paper, is fitted between inner and outer sheet containers 1, 9 and a vent 12 is provided at the bottom of the cell.
