Solid polyolefines, e.g. polyethylene, containing catalyst residues derived from an organo-metallic compound and a compound of a transition metal, are purified by treating the polyolefine after removing any polymerization medium, with a liquid mixture comprising hydrogen chloride, an alcohol and an anhydrous non-alcoholic organic liquid at a temperature below 100 DEG C., separating the liquid mixture from the polyolefine, and washing and drying the polyolefin. The purification may be effected in several series-connected reaction vessels. Prior to drying the polyolefine may be treated with steam in the presence of an alkaline agent. The alcohol may be ethyl alcohol. The non-alcoholic organic liquid may be a hydrocarbon, a chlorinated hydrocarbon, an ether, or a nitro-compound, or mixtures thereof. |
