In a process for producing gases containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen wherein solid, liquid or gaseous carbonaceous fuels are introduced with gasifying agents into a reaction zone maintained atan elevated temperature, e.g. 2000-3500 F., and an elevated pressure, e.g. up to 1000 p.s.i.g., and the hot gases produced are cooled in an associated cooling zone at the elevated pressure with a volatile cooling liquid, e.g. water, the apparatus in use is shut down when desired by discontinuing the supply of carbonaceous fuel and gasifying agents to the reaction zone without reducing the pressure therein, continuously supplying cooling liquid to the cooling zone at a temperature below the boiling point of the cooling liquid at the pressure prevailing in the cooling zone, and reducing the pressure in the apparatus by withdrawing gas at a rate such that the pressure is maintained in excess of the vapour pressure of the cooling liquid in the cooling zone. The apparatus shown has a reaction zone 1 to which a hydrocarbon oil, steam and oxygen are supplied, a gas outlet 11 leading to a cooling zone 12 containing water and a cooled gas outlet 36. Hot gases passing through the outlet 11 are led into the water through a pipe 13 and water is fed into the cooling zone through line 28 and through line 16 to cool the lower end and the upper end respectively of the pipes 11 and 13.
