The hardware system (1) comprises a base module (2) including a master controller and a plug-in module (7). The plug-in module communicates with a sensor and/or an actuator and/or a data network, via wireless transmission. The base module is extended with an intermediate module (3) which is connectable to the tower design or sandwich construction of the base module. The base module comprises a central power supply which supplies power to the plug-in module and supplies operating voltage to the intermediate module. An independent claim is included for a method of operating a hardware system.
