PURPOSE: A check recognizing method using image data of a magnetic ink character area is provided to use standardized characteristics of magnetic ink characters, thereby providing sufficient reliability for check discrimination even with low resolution video data. CONSTITUTION: Partial image data of a magnetic ink character printed area is extracted from the image data of a check inputted(S100). The partial image data is binarized to pixel unit(S200). The magnetic ink character of the inputted check is determined by comparing the pixel value of the binary pixel with the standardized characteristics of the magnetic ink characters(S300). The image data of the inputted check has resolution of 30-70 dpi(dot per inch). The partial image data is extracted from the upper and lower part of the front and back image of the inputted check.
