<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sliding member constituted of a substrate and an amorphous carbon film coated on the surface thereof, having improved initial affinity and exhibiting a greater reduction of friction coefficient subsequent to the initial run-in operation, relative to a prior art sliding member. <P>SOLUTION: The sliding member is constituted of a substrate and an amorphous carbon film made from an amorphous carbon material, formed on the surface thereof.
