<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium transportation device capable of keeping an accuracy decrease in medium position detection which is caused because a medium as a detection target of a detection unit deviates from an assumed transportation path and to provide a recording apparatus as well. <P>SOLUTION: A pair of transportation rollers 32 causes the transportation driven roller 32b to deviate slightly to a transportation direction downstream side from a position just above a transportation drive roller 32a, and sends out paper P in such a manner as to guide it obliquely downward. An entry direction of the paper P sent out from the pair of transportation rollers 32 and a holding surface 30a of a support table 30 are set to cross each other. Translucent glass 41 functioning as a detection window of an imaging unit 40 arranged at a position on the other side of the paper P with respect to the holding surface 30a is positioned on the downstream side in the transportation direction Y with respect to a crossing position where the entry direction of paper and the holding surface 30a cross each other.
