618,496. Practice bombs. LINDMAN, E. I. April 21, 1942, No. 16073/43. Convention date, June 19, 1941. Divided out of 618,494. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 15, 1942.] [Class 9 (i)] The firing pin 10 and the striking plate 11 secured thereto form a movable light assembly which, on contact with water or the ground, ignite a low-sensitive primer 19 having the sensitivity of a shotgun cartridge. The primer may be a shot-gun cartridge with the pellets removed. The primer ignites a black powder or nitrous powder charge contained in a tube 18, and this charge in turn expels (or ignites and expels) a smoke - forming or light-emitting substance contained in a tube 27, this substance (or its products of combustion) being blown backwards, out of the bomb, through the open end of a tube. A wad 50 is disposed between the tubes 18 and 27. During its flight through the air, the pin 10 is held spaced from the primer by a spring 16. During transport the pin is locked in safe position by means of a clip disposed around the firing pin, this clip comprising two pieces of resilient sheet metal 21, 22, held together by a piano wire 25 which is threaded through a hole in a headed pin which passes through the pieces 21, 22, and may be secured to the aeroplane by means of an eye 26, (see Specification 618,495). The tube 18 is held in position by means of a screw 17, or other shoulder and the tube 27 by means of a splitpin 28 or a resilient hook. Smoke-forming substance may be held in a glass ampulla (shown in dotted lines). The body 1 of the bomb is made of concrete and tail vanes 7 are provided. |
