摘要	<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for enhancing images in which an input image generated by an imaging device, such as a short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) camera, a sensor or all other imaging devices, is processed to produce an input histogram representing a distribution of pixel intensity in the input image. <P>SOLUTION: A method for enhancing images includes: determining histogram start and end points and calculating a variable plateau profile depending upon a type of enhancement desired, the plateau profile capable of taking on all desired shapes or sizes and including two or more plateau regions in the profile; clipping the input histogram along the variable plateau profile; creating a cumulative histogram from the clipped histogram and normalizing it; and transforming the input image into an enhanced output image by using the normalized cumulative histogram as a look-up table. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT
