An ion source for a mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising: a device which emits a stream of droplets; and one or more ultrasonic transmitters or sonotrodes which create one or more gas phase acoustic standing waves downstream of said device. The acoustic standing waves may be used to: further nebulise the droplets; induce internal mixing or to mix a reagent with the droplets; to trap, move, focus and/or defocus the stream of droplets; and/or to reduce the average size of the droplets. The device for emitting the stream of droplets may be, for example, an electrospray device which produces charged droplets. Alternatively, the droplets may be ionized by another method before entering a mass spectrometer via an ion inlet. |
