A device for conditioning, in particular for scraping, a roll, in particular in a web-producing, -processing and/or -finishing machine such as a paper, cardboard, tissue or film machine, comprises at least one sensor unit arranged in the region of the roll to be scraped, and at least one evaluation unit. At least one portion of a surface of the roll is disposed in such a manner that the surface can be detected by means of the at least one sensor unit and the degree of soiling can be evaluated by contrasting the clean and soiled sections of the surface and/or by pattern recognition and/or by image recognition using the evaluation unit.
