The invention relates to a surgical instrument (10) for connecting body tissue (126, 128), comprising a shaft (12) and a first and a second tool element which are arranged or formed so as to be movable relative to each other and each of which comprises an electrode (28, 58). The electrodes define a minimum distance from each other, lie opposite each other, and face each other in a position of proximity of the tool elements, said first tool element (48) being arranged or formed at the distal end of the shaft. The aim of the invention is to improve said surgical instrument such that a mechanical load on body tissue sub-connections during the removal of the surgical instrument is minimized, said connections being produced in particular by means of a current flow. This is achieved in that the second tool element (46) can be brought from an operating position, in which the second tool element can be brought into the position of proximity, into a removal position, in which a retraction circumferential line (154) defined by the electrode of the second tool element is shorter than a proximity circumferential line (152) defined by the electrode in the position of proximity. |
