The present invention relates to a system and method for paying insurance benefits by using cigarette serial numbers. The system provides a serial number on the silver paper used for packaging cigarettes or to the outer package of cigarettes and enables a smoker to register the serial number, thereby allowing the smoker to know how many cigarettes he/she has smoked and enabling the payment of insurance benefits on the basis of the registered number of serial numbers when a disease caused by smoking occurs. Thus, an insurance company may be able to sell inexpensive insurance and smokers may be able to pay the medical fees resulting from smoking. The method includes: the registration of a cigarette serial number by an insurance policy holder; the reception and organization of the number of registered cigarette serial numbers by the insurance holder through a central server; the calculation of insurance benefits and the payment sum for an insurance policy holder on the basis of the registered cigarette serial numbers; the billing of an insurance policy holder for the calculated insurance benefits by an insurance company; and the payment for the sum calculated according to the registered number of cigarette serial numbers if the insurance policy holder has a disease due to cigarettes.
