In a reciprocating compressor, the piston 8 is directly coupled to the driving coil 10 by a yoke 9, this being connected by a spring 11 to the pole-shoe 7 of the field magnet 6. The spring is connected at either end by axial torsion rods 13, 15. The torsion bar 15 connected to the yoke 9 is cooled by the pumped gas while the other one, 13, attached to the pole shoe, is largely screened and so gets hotter. To compensate for this the rear bar 13 is thicker than the other, e.g. it could have twice the moment of inertia. The pumped gas may pass through ducts 17 to a hollow piston. |
