In an apparatus in which a swivellable horizontally directed discharge nozzle is mounted over the waste outlet of a bathtub and supplied by an external pump, the bathtub is emptied by the pump, at reduced pressure, by arranging for part of its discharge to be recycled. Thus, pump outlet chamber 43, which is connected to the nozzle by way of tube 24, is connected both to the waste pipe and to pump inlet chamber 42 by raising valve assembly 47, 50. Rotation of the nozzle, and thus tube 24, is imparted by pin 51 and slot 52 to assembly 47, 50. The cam surface 57 of plug 50 slides over fixed projection 60 and lifts the assembly against the action of compression spring 54. Openings 44 and 45 are thus faced to enable the water to enter the waste pipe which includes a socket 62 for sliding engagement with an axial guide pin fixed to plug 50.
