<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adapter that enables various kinds of optical systems to appropriately function in an interchangeable-lens camera system. <P>SOLUTION: An adapter comprises an adapter control unit capable of communicating with a camera body and capable of communicating with an interchangeable lens provided with a focus adjustment mechanism including a focus lens that performs focus adjustment. The adapter control unit receives a first control order generated in the camera body according to the detection result of a focus detection unit from the camera body, converts the first control order into a second control order, and transmits the second control order to the interchangeable lens.
