PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioning system for optimizing a capacity (or capability) of the air conditioning system with respect to cooling requirements of a sleeper compartment of a truck so as to minimize energy consumption and its operating method. SOLUTION: The air conditioning system 10 is provided for cooling the sleeper compartment 16 of the truck when the main engine of the truck is not operating. The air conditioning system includes a variable speed compressor 20, a variable speed condenser fan 22, a variable speed evaporator blower 24, and a controller 14 configured to optimize a cooling capacity of the system with respect to the cooling requirements of the sleeper compartment by selectively adjusting the speeds of the variable speed components 20, 22, 24.
