This invention provides a method of treating a subject afflicted with multiple sclerosis and experiencing an acute symptomatic relapse which comprises administering to the subject an inhibitor of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in an amount effective to reduce the amount of nitric oxide produced by eNOS so as to thereby treat the subject, wherein the inhibitor of eNOS exhibits at least a two-fold higher selectivity for eNOS than for inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and/or neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS).
